![]() ![]() For what it's worth, I paid attention in school but nonetheless found the time and money spent on this e-book to be a worthwhile investment before visiting SF. This book may not be as helpful to you if you are already familiar with the City's history. Having read through it just before arriving in SF, I had a sense of (1) what to look for, (2) the history behind what I was looking at and (3) what the City would have looked like in the past. Then, the end of the book summarizes the most significant attractions. Each section gives an overview about a significant stage in the City's discovery/development with informative and entertaining stories. ![]() In this unique book, author Rand Richards not only provides a vivid narrative of this special city from its very beginnings all the way through to the modern era, but also tells where to find the historic buildings, sites, museums, and artifacts that make that history come alive. The book is designed to be read through once and then consulted as necessary while you are touring SF. No American city has a more colorful history than San Francisco. According to Rand Richards in Historic San Francisco: A Concise History and Guide, San Francisco’s population rose from about one thousand in early 1848 to two thousand in February 1849, and to twenty thousand or more at the end of that landmark year, 23. ![]() Richards came to my rescue with this well-written and engaging e-book. I am busy enough and travel often enough that I don't have time to conduct exhaustive research about every destination. I read this book before my recent trip to SF and found it to be invaluable. ![]()
